According to its charters, the IAEA is tasked to help member states in an unbiased manner to develop peaceful nuclear energy.
The nuclear watchdog should assist member states in achieving sustainable development goals through distributing knowledge and transferring technology and equipment. It has essentially a technical and legal nature and should maintain neutrality and avoid politicization.
The body is also required by the resolutions passed in its general conference, and also in the United Nations General Assembly, to condemn any aggressive and terrorist action against nuclear facilities.
However, the IAEA has failed to do so on the Israeli regime’s frequent sabotage attacks against nuclear facilities in Iran and assassination of several Iranian nuclear scientists.
The latest sabotage act by the Israeli regime was carried out in Karaj city, west of capital Tehranو in late June.
The IAEA didn’t condemn the attack, but instead, asked Iran to allow the international organization to replace memory cards of the cameras in the facility.
Iran has made it clear that the facility was not subject to the IAEA monitoring, since the investigation on the sabotage act was still in place and the facility was out of service. However, Tehran regretted that the IAEA refused to condemn such attacks, although three attacks took place only this year.
Head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Mohammad Eslami said in the IAEA general conference this month that sabotage attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities was in violation of the international law.
Inaction by the United Nations and its nuclear watchdog the IAEA regarding terrorist attacks on nuclear facilities would incentivize the aggressors to continue to violate the most basic principles of the international law and the UN Charter.
Therefore, it’s imperative that the IAEA immediately addresses the issue to protect the safety of nuclear facilities and maintain its legitimacy.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has made it clear that it strongly expects the IAEA to condemn the attacks transparently and unconditionally.
